<image:title>Initiatives - Your lawn is not your living room: Leave some leaves for winter habitat protection! - Many families in Franklin Park and Forest have been including native plants in their gardens to increase biodiversity and benefit pollinators. Now, all the critters that benefit from these supportive gardening practices need a place to hideout for the winter. Mother Nature’s solution is leaf litter!</image:title>

The leaves alternate along an often droopy stem. Look for a silvery main vein running just off center of each leaf. <image:title>Initiatives - Plant it…they will come - Both Wisteria floribunda (Japanese wisteria) and Wisteria sinensis (Chinese wisteria) are persistent and prolific. The vines can grow from 10-25 feet per year, and roots can anchor up to 10 feet in soil, crowding out native vegetation and killing trees and shrubs by girdling them. The density of canopy from the wisterias can change the amount of light that reaches the forest floor. Both effects, that of killing trees and the alteration of light patterns, can change the structure of the forest. The damage to our environment from invasive plants is well-known and can be immense. Yet it is still legal to sell invasive plants such as wisteria in retail nurseries.</image:title>
<image:caption>Invasive plants have a foothold in many of our natural areas that have been untended for more than 30 years, and, unfortunately, that is most of our natural areas. They are wreaking havoc on our local ecology. The work of the UFA is as much about habitat restoration as it is about beautification. <image:caption>Also known as fig buttercup, lesser celandine (Ficaria verna) is native to Europe and parts of northern Africa and Asia. It was introduced to the United States in the late 1860s as an ornamental plant. Lesser celandine grows so densely and rapidly that it forms continuous mats of thick foliage. These mats smother native ephemerals and prevent seeds of wildflowers, grasses, and trees from germinating. Lesser celandine is locally common in the Potomac River and James River watersheds, and is spreading rapidly throughout Virginia. It is capable of taking over bottomland forests and lawns near suburban areas. Blue Ridge Prism - Lesser celandine fact sheet</image:caption>

<image:caption>Native to China, Callery pear — especially its cultivar 'Bradford' — was widely planted beginning in the 1960s. With its white flowers and attractive fall foliage, Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana) was beloved by landscapers and homeowners alike. Unfortunately, this tree has escaped cultivation and is spreading rapidly in the wild. Now, our forests are paying the price for the Bradford pear's popularity. Callery pear is considered one of the biggest threats to our forests and native plants. Yet, despite the threats they pose, Callery pear's cultivars continue to be sold by nurseries in Virginia and elsewhere. The most common cultivars include: Do not purchase or plant any Callery pear cultivars. Blue Ridge Prism - Callery pear fact sheet</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our Franklin Park Halloween Parade table was a huge success! Urban Forest Alliance gave away over 50 native plants and tree seedlings and 45 packets of native wildflower seeds to neighbors wanting to expand their native plant gardens. Our generous neighbors have more to give, just for the asking!</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Restoration, rewilding, health</image:title>
<image:caption>Urban Forest Alliance and Franklin Area Citizens Association have paired up and have been engaged for well over a year to restore the north end of land that runs between Old Dominion Drive and Vermont Avenue. This area serves as one of the major gateways into our neighborhood. It has been unmaintained for years, resulting in an unsightly mess overtaken by invasive plants. Exotic vines threaten stately trees by blocking sunlight and/or girdling trunks. Native plants struggle to take hold. The area around the drainage basin has been infested with Japanese knotweed. Our two neighborhood groups are working to change this!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Urban Forest Alliance neighbors Steve Lagerfeld and Mike Rapp call themselves, half in jest, the “Committee to Re-Forest the Forest.” Each fall, Steve and Mike have offered Franklin Park & Forest neighbors substantial nursery-grown oaks, maples, and black gums, delivered and planted at a considerable discount, thanks in part to the support of Great Jones Developments.</image:caption>

<image:title>Maureen's sandbox - Native Plant & Seed Giveaways</image:title>
<image:caption>Our Franklin Park Halloween Parade table was a huge success! Urban Forest Alliance gave away over 50 native plants and tree seedlings and 45 packets of native wildflower seeds to neighbors wanting to expand their native plant gardens. Our generous neighbors have more to give, just for the asking!</image:caption>
