Community Garden Days Summer 2026

Unsightly, unhealthy, and full of Japanese knotweed! This is what greeted residents and visitors to Franklin Park in November, 2020. The basin was eventually drained, but not before the standing water killed two canopy trees. With the help of the Virginia Department of Forestry, the Virginia Department of Transportation, and many neighbor-volunteers, the Urban Forest Alliance was able to transform this area into a native plant garden.

Things to wear and bring —Weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes with a good tread appropriate for walking through a wooded area with uneven surfaces. Long sleeves and pants, hats, and sunglasses if needed. Gloves are a must!! Some extra gloves will be available, but sizes are limited. Bring walking sticks if you have them and use them for stability – a few are available for use. Sunscreen is recommended as we often work in sunny areas. Please bring water as it is always a good idea, even in cooler weather. Bring a shovel or loppers or shears or a hori-hori knife or your favorite garden tool. Some tools will be provided, but extras are always welcome!

Gather – Near the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue. All participants will be asked to sign in and instructions given for clearing the targeted plant(s). If you arrive after the start time, ask for an activity leader (Steve, Lisa, or Maureen). Work is available at many levels of ability; so if the work discussed is not appropriate for you or you are uncomfortable undertaking it, please make that known by asking for another task. Working outdoors brings with it risks that are largely dependent on weather, such as heat, cold, sun, insects, etc. There are often uneven or otherwise tricky surfaces. Being aware and dressing properly is of the utmost importance to ensure an enjoyable time for all!

Things to know — A rain date will be held on the Sunday following the scheduled day. Decisions on whether to reschedule will be made by 8:30 on Saturday morning and notification sent out via the UFA email listserve.

We’re looking forward to seeing you!
